Are you just starting to play jazz?

I know that your first appearance on stage at a jam can be intimidating. Preparation can alleviate this anxiety.

Here are some tips on how to prepare:

Learn at least 3 standards in the standard keys. Be able to play the head on your instrument, know the lyrics (especially if you're a singer), know the changes (the chord progression) and the scales related to those changes.

Get there early, introduce yourself to the host (that's me) and tell me that you're a rookie. I'm looking to make this a very inclusive jam, so I'll fit you in at a time that will make it comfortable for you.

Play with confidence. You might only know blues changes in F, but make your statement.
